On Monday, March 11, the City Council Finance Committee had the opportunity to move the Bring Chicago Home resolution forward. A vote was taken on whether to table the resolution. While the motion to table appeared to fail, Chairman Pat O'Connor permitted repeated votes until it passed.

The Bring Chicago Home coalition has been working tirelessly to advance an affordable, responsible and popular solution to address homelessness in Chicago. On Monday, March 11, you had a unique opportunity to support these efforts by voting our resolution out of committee. You chose to align yourself with high-end developers and the real estate industry, disregarding the positive impact that this new revenue stream would have on more than 80,000 Chicagoans living in shelters, on the streets and doubled-up. This resolution would have allowed Chicagoans to weigh in on raising the Real Estate Transfer Tax by 1.2 percentage points on properties over $1 million to create a new revenue stream for housing and services for people experiencing homelessness. The vote to table our resolution was not about whether the Finance Committee is the proper committee to debate our resolution. There are fair arguments on both sides. Instead, this vote was about thwarting an opportunity for Chicagoans to vote on raising their own tax. While City Council pushes through proposals that give hundreds of millions of city money to developers, it is inexcusable that you stood in the way of a common-sense proposal that simply asks for voters to decide. As we move into the next administration, we call on you to reconsider your position and align yourself with the more than 80 organizations that support Bring Chicago Home. Chicagoans are depending on you.

On Monday, March 11, you had a unique opportunity to support these efforts by voting our resolution out of committee. By not attending the Finance Committee meeting at which there was such a critical vote taking place, you allowed the interests of high-end developers and the real estate industry to rule the day. Your absence meant we could not move forward with the positive impact that this new revenue stream would have on more than 80,000 Chicagoans living in shelters, on the streets and doubled-up. This resolution would have allowed Chicagoans to weigh in on raising the Real Estate Transfer Tax by 1.2 percentage points on properties over $1 million to create a new revenue stream for housing and services for people experiencing homelessness. The Bring Chicago Home coalition has been working tirelessly to advance an affordable, responsible and popular solution to address homelessness in Chicago. On Monday, March 11, you chose to stand up to the real estate industry and side with the everyday Chicagoan by voting to move our resolution forward. For this, we are extremely grateful. As you well know, the vote to table our resolution was not about whether the Finance Committee is the proper committee to debate our resolution. Instead, this was about high-end developers and the real estate industry trying to stop us in our tracks. But we will not be moved. Support for our proposal is only increasing. We are grateful that you stood up to these powerful interest groups and voted to support more than 80,000 Chicagoans that find themselves on the streets, in a shelter or living doubled-up. Although we were delayed in getting this resolution passed through committee, we remain committed to getting our referendum question on the March 2020 ballot. Thank you for your support and we look forward to working with you to win this critical campaign.
